Police in Brazil have killed eight people and arrested one during a raid on a gang of thieves

Rio de Janeiro (Reuters) – Brazilian military police, federal police and highway police exchanged gunfire with suspected burglars in a favela in northern Rio de Janeiro on Sunday morning.Police now confirm that at least eight suspects were killed in the crossfire and one person has been arrested.Police also seized a cache of weapons and ammunition and more than 70 kilograms of drugs.In order to reduce the possible harm to local residents, police told 17 schools in the area to switch to online classes for the day, while nearby hospitals and clinics were also ordered to close.Last week, Brazil’s federal Supreme Court ordered the state government of Rio de Janeiro to take steps to avoid harming local civilians in its hunt for suspects.(Editing by Liu Shengtao)
