Russia has launched an investigation after a video surfaced online purportedly showing Ukrainian soldiers abusing prisoners of war.A video circulating on the Internet shows the captured soldier being shot in the leg, the Russian Federal Investigation Committee said in a statement Released Sunday. The head of Russia’s investigative committee, Alexander Bastrygin, reportedly ordered “investigators to ascertain the truth of the incident, collect documented evidence and identify all those involved before bringing them to justice.”It added that while it was unclear when or where the disturbing videos were filmed, some reports suggested the incident took place in a military camp of a “nationalist” unit in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine.Apparently, the disturbing videos were shot at the same unknown location and were posted online over the weekend. The report said the video showed a number of people lying on the ground, all apparently Russian prisoners of war.All the soldiers appeared to have been badly beaten and wounded in the legs. The wounded soldiers were interrogated by armed men, many of them wearing the blue armbands commonly used by Ukrainian forces. It is clear that some of the injured died during interrogation. The video also shows three other prisoners being ordered out of a van before being shot in the leg at close range. The extreme cruelty shown in the video has been condemned, including by pro-Ukrainians, the report said. For example, Elliot Higgins, founder of the US government-funded investigative website RingbellCat, described it as a “very serious matter” and called for “further investigation” into the disturbing videos.Source: Reference Information Network
